PROGRAMMATIC NETWORKS

 

CONCEPT

As a competition strategy, the proposal is about the design of a flexible system adaptable to different situations and functions, a system that can be adapted to the three themes in the different proposed scenarios. The project is formulated as a generic reconfigurable system informed with specific parameters of each site.

'Programmatic Networks' generates a series of suspension structures with low environmental impact and high potential for social interaction, offering the user an enriching spatial experience. The project is designed as a self-supporting structural system, consisting of a tubular steel frame and a network of tensors of variable density. The frame defines the operative area, and the network defines the permeability, being the combination of both the one that defines the use of each space.

The frame’s design, as a curved, dynamic and continuous element, weaved on itself, emphasizing the condition of diffuse and permeable boundaries. The proposal defines and captures space without enclosing it.

 

STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR

At the structural level, the system behaves conceptually as a wheel of tensed rays. The cross-linking of the tensors gives absolute stability to the frame, avoiding deformations, by compensating compression with the tensile stresses. In turn, the tangential assembly of the tensioners to the frame allows optimizing its tension behavior and avoiding torsional stresses.

In this way, a very light and resistant tensegrity structure is obtained, in which the frame and the stringing establish a symbiotic relationship in which one does not work without the other.

 

 

SPECIFIC PARAMETERS OF EACH SITE:

1. "Urban landscape" - Under the highway Buenos Aires / La Plata "

-Location: The axis of the highway is used as the highest urban reference to position the Pavilion. The upper level of the pavilion is defined from a horizontal plane four meters above the ground, corresponding with the basement of ‘La Usina del Arte’.

-Space Hierarchy / Uses: A larger space is determined in the entrance to the property, from the corner of Av. Pedro de Mendoza and Caffarena, and a second more linear space is accommodated towards Juan Manuel Blanes street. The clamping between both spaces occurs at the height of the secondary axis determined by the columns of the highway.

- Weave Density: Closes with greater density and generates a back towards the warehouses of the South Basin. In this way, the project becomes a screen that works as Exhibit support in accordance with the activities of ‘La Usina del Arte’.

 

2. "Cultural Heritage" - Vatican Square

-Location: As the positioning axis of the pavilion the curve that determines the floor lights that cross the Vatican Square is used.

-Space Hierarchy / Uses: A more hierarchical space towards the west is determined, which is used for the visualization of open-air Cinema, in relation to the screen installed in the Plaza; and a more content space for Reading, oriented towards the East. Both enclosures are equipped with public furniture characteristic of the city.

- Weave Density: A permeable space is generated (from raising the frames) with vision to the screen in the Cinema sector, and a more contained space in the Reading sector, using the density of the double stringing.

 

3. "Children" - Parque Carlos Thays

-Location: The road that connects both margins of the roof ramp of the Buenos Aires Convention Center is used as the primary axis of the project's location. In turn, a secondary organization axis is drawn, perpendicular to said path.

-Space Hierarchy / Uses: Both spaces are of similar dimensions, but of different heights and slopes, using the existing topography. In the space with the greatest slope, a Games Network for children is designed, and in the space with the least slope, the string network becomes a Solarium / Napping Place.

- Weave Density: In each enclosure, the stringing becomes living space from which you can see the predominant visual focuses: the Park, the Urban Front, the Faculty of Law of the UBA, and the dome of the Palais de Glace.
